“A knowledge of cursive may not be “relevant” to the modern world, but it is essential to a visceral sense of the past, and an ability to examine the literature, correspondence, and history contained in original documents.”
As many U.S. schools begin to phase out the teaching of cursive, Judith Thurman writes in defense of script: http://nyr.kr/MLREak
I wouldn’t take notes or scribble fancy letters the same, if any, if cursive hadn’t been taught at my school. Learning cursive is important to cultivating young creative minds, because the art of type shouldn’t stop at block lettering.

Quoting Robert A. Heinlein, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
It is so easy to turn off your senses from the real world and to recline back and turn on the TV while mindlessly surfing the internet or watching too many youtube videos than originally intended to. We, as in young people blessed with things like a laptop or wireless internet, live on a dangerous ledge of falling into passive, inactive lives. With so many things and opportunities at a disposable access, it may seem very daunting! Young people don’t know what to do with their lives, because there’s just too many possibilities. I guess this predicament dubs itself as “first world problems,” but problems they are, nonetheless. I’ll admit that I sometimes opt out of doing things because of my own petty reasons that seem more like excuses.
As corny as this sounds, we are given one life, and I’m not going to waste it. Human beings are not meant to lead one-track lives. So, I try to do as many things as I physically can. This seems like a very simple, “duh” idea, but you would be surprised at how many “I really wish I can/did/said/learned/etc.” thoughts run through the minds of people all the time.
Many people have the tools and accessibility to create endless masterpieces, but very few actually put themselves out there. I don’t think any one person can ever be sure of themselves, as uncertainty always creeps in the most confident of people. Perhaps, in the ultimate search of being something, we should eliminate “being” and “something.“ So that the answer to “what do you want to be?” will be replied with an all-knowing smirk. “Anything and everything” is what I would say, because being one thing restricts too much.
Here’s a charming, very well-argued monologue from the perspective of Mr. Comic Sans. Yea, yea so what if I am two years late from when this was posted. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading this, and I’ll admit it, I have made jabs and derogatory remarks in the past, and I guess you could call me a Comic Sans asshole. But not anymore. Here is me making up for it.
I present to you, I’m Comic Sans, Asshole.
Just a speck of my summer adventures from The Getty and LACMA in Los Angeles last summer. You could clearly see my fascination to the beauty of flower garden within The Getty.
Gonna visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art hopefully soon!
I feel like a rocket ship awaiting for NASA’s GO signal. I can feel the hairs on my forearm standing on the tips of their roots. Creative energy has stuck me like a lightning bolt, and I cannot stop. It’s like getting upholstered like a house in a hurricane of excitement and anxiety. Tomorrow is a new day. New beginnings, a fresher sense of self.
